Storm-ready porches

Panels that lift out, connectors that hold the roof, and a plan for the day a named storm is on the way.

A screen won't stop a hurricane. What we can do is build the porch so the panels come out in minutes, the roof stays tied to the house and you know your order of work.

In the written plan

  • Screen panels with fixings you can open by hand

  • A rack or hooks to store the panels

  • Metal connectors from roof to posts and posts to footings

  • The maker's test report for any rated screening we propose

  • A one-page plan: who takes down what, in what order

What changes the cost

What moves the number

There's no figure on this page. Your written plan prices each of these.

  • Rated or standard screen

Heavy-duty screening tested for debris costs more than standard and needs its own frame.

  • Number of panels

More panels mean more fixings and more to store.

  • Roof connectors

An older porch may need new connectors, and fitting them can mean opening up framing.

  • The structure you have

Posts, footings and beams are checked first and repaired if they won't hold.

  • Permit and inspection

Connectors are inspected; fees and timing depend on where you live.

  • Storage

Racks, hooks or a shelf for the panels are a small add-on.

How it goes

From the visit to the last day

  1. 01

    Step 1: The look

We check posts, footings and how the roof is tied down.

  2. 02

    Step 2: The plan

Fixings, connectors, any rated screening and the storm plan are written down.

  3. 03

    Step 3: The work

Connections come first, so the inspector can see them before walls close.

  4. 04

    Step 4: The rehearsal

We take the panels out with you once, so you know it works.

Questions about storm-ready porches

Do I have to take the panels down?

Standard panels, yes, before a named storm. They're built to come out in minutes without damage, and we show you how.

Can you fit my existing porch?

Often. We check the posts and the connections first. Some older porches need repairs before they can be tied down.

Who decides if a screen is rated?

The maker's test report, and your building department. Not us. We'll show you the paperwork for anything we propose.

Do you do storm repair?

Not as emergency work. We build planned jobs. After a storm we'll look at your porch when it's safe and tell you what we see.

Want a porch you can button up?

Tell us how the roof is attached now, and we'll start there.
